Frequently Asked Questions

Learner FAQ:

How does LearnMV work? Say I find a mentor or organization that I’m curious about…what next?

LearnMV is a FREE community resource broker. By carefully vetting each listed organization or mentor, we are able to ensure safe and easy access to a host of Island-based learning opportunities.

The arrangements of each learning experience are negotiated by the learner and the organization or mentor. LearnMV does not provide programming, make appointments, schedule visits, or charge fees.

What is the cost?

LearnMV is a free database. The terms of each learning experience vary, depending on the resource.

Many Island organizations are free to the public and offer free or low-cost educational programming.

Some LearnMV mentors and teachers are volunteers. Others charge a modest fee for private lessons or small groups. Trade or barter arrangements can also be available in some cases.

Mentor FAQ:

How much time do I have to commit to be a mentor or participating organization?

As much or as little as you like! Mentors can volunteer once, once a month, or five days a week. Organizations can list available times for group tours or visits, or make staff available for phone calls or virtual meet-ups.

Can I get paid?

The goal of LearnMV is to encourage community members to envision a broader definition of education; learning can happen anywhere, especially on an Island as rich with talent and natural resources as ours. It is our hope that non-profit organizations and other Island resources will offer free or low-cost learning experiences to LearnMV community members.

Individual Mentors may choose to volunteer their time or charge a modest fee for private or small-group learning experiences.
